What Self-Care Is and What It Isn't

Dec 20, 2021

Today we are going to be talking about what self-care is and what it isn’t.

"Self-care" has become a buzz word in recent years, but what is it, really?

When asked the question: “Do you take care of yourself?” most of us will answer “yes” — we’d even think, “What kind of question is this? Of course, I care about myself.”

When asked, “In what ways do you take care of yourself?” — well, that’s where the tricky part begins.

So that’s what we are digging into today.

We are going to discuss:

  • What true self-care is
  • What self-care is not
  • The key to feeling peace and joy
  • And how to determine what self-care practices are right for you

Let's begin with true self-care.  True self care means that you are taking care of your whole self in a way that works for YOU.

When you are taking care of yourself mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually then you are able to be your best self with your family, at work, in relationships and when parenting.

True self-care supports every aspect of your life.

WHAT IS SELF-CARE EXACTLY?

Self-care is any activity that you do deliberately in order to take care of your mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health.  It can look like:

  • Dancing in your living room
  • Sipping tea and watching the sunrise
  • Journaling
  • Decluttering a room
  • Practicing yoga
  • Working with Tarot or other intentional cards
  • Buying yourself flowers
  • Growing a garden
  • Doing a DIY project
  • Anointing your body with essential oils
  • Talking a walk in nature

WHAT ISN'T SELF-CARE?

Knowing what self-care is not might be even more important than knowing what it is. Self-care is not something that we force ourselves to do, or something we don’t enjoy doing. Self-care is something that refuels us, rather than takes from us.

Self-care isn’t a selfish act either. It is not only about considering our needs; it is rather about knowing what we need to do in order to take care of ourselves.  If you don’t take enough care of yourself, you won’t be in the place to give to your loved ones either.

In a few words, self-care is the key to feeling and living in peace and joy.

WHERE DO I START WITH MY SELF-CARE PRACTICE?

Here’s your action item for today:

First, take my Self-Care Code Quiz which will tell you exactly what kind of self-care fits your unique needs.

Then be aware of what self-care practice you do, why you do it, how it feels, and what the outcomes are.

This awareness will let you know if your self-care practice is refueling you or taking away you.

So first take the Self-Care Code quiz, then try out a variety of self-care practices and see how they fit.  And let me know how it goes.

If you have questions or want to share your self-care code with me, screenshot this episode, tag me on Instagram stories, and we’ll chat about it. That's what I'm here for.
