What is your Soul here to do?

Jan 02, 2023

Happy New Year!

By now you have probably received countless emails and scrolled through post after post on Facebook and Instagram urging you to set an intention, create a list of resolutions or pick a word for the year.

It's inspiring AND it's a lot all at the same time.

I hear you and the funny thing is New Year's is my favorite time of year! But I can't hang with the constant barrage of emails and posts, they overwhelm me.

Instead, I need to tune the voices out and create a space of quiet to reflect on my soul's path.

I have found that the clearest path to knowing what's next for the new year, or for a new day, comes from a daily sacred practice. Every day I show up on my yoga mat, in nature and in my journal to better understand who I am, what I want and what I am here to do.

Whether I am at the turn of the year or the turn of a day, I get quiet. I sit with all my thoughts, feelings and desires and just listen.

I ask myself: How am I doing really? And what do I need?

I let my mind travel through all the parts of my life....mothering, home, money, relationships, body, joy.

What am I feeling?
What's needed?
Where do I feel alive?
Where am I shrinking myself?
What do I long for?
What does my soul want?
I just lean in and listen. That's all.

Sometimes I make a bold choice to sign up for an exercise program or wake up earlier or start eating more veggies but for the most part, I just listen. I don't jump to solve or fix anything.

Listening gives me data. Through it, I discover patterns of thinking and wanting. I recognize self-sabotaging thoughts. I reunite with long-time dreams and desires. I hear my intuition.

This data is information about who I am and how I want to live.

With that info, I go into my day doing my best to be a little bit more ME.

And then when it comes to pivotal points in the year, like New Year's, I gather up my data and decide what's getting thrown into the fire (literally, I write down what I don't want to bring with me into the new year and burn it) and what dreams and longings I want to bring to life in the new year.

I keep my new year's ritual simple but sacred.

And then I wake up the next morning and get on my mat, go outside and write in my journal to continue listening and leaning into who I am becoming. I do that again the next day and the day after that and the day after that.

Making change in any part of your life is a daily practice.

So as you enter this brand new year, consider the process you used to pick a word for the year or to set an intention for the year. Could some part of this process be turned into a daily practice? What part of that process could you apply to your everyday life so that you are always turning inward and gathering data?

Your daily sacred practice will not only make the next new year's more potent, it will also enrich your daily life with more intention, clarity and momentum.

Doesn't that sound amazing?
